Catching Up

In the past couple of weeks, I have been catching up with my 'little girls' from last year. I went through some weeks of not being inpsired and struggling to find my rythm. It's back. Woohooo!!! For the month of October I am working on pieces inpired by Lady Gaga, Grace Jones, and Heath Ledger as the Joker. These are in celebration of Halloween. I will be done with them shortly. For the months of November through January, I will be working on pieces inpsired by my favorite artists such as Marlene Dumas, Angel Botello, and Jerome Caja. All three of the above artists have had a major role in the evolution my 'little girls.'

A Collection of Lucy's

A Collection Of Lucy’s

I have compiled a collection of my ‘little girls’ featuring Lucille Ball. Below are some of my previous pieces that I didn’t get to post last year. There are 3 other pieces that I posted in March of 2009. Above are 4 of my latest pieces that I just finished last week.

1) Lucy’s Drunken Ball- Even though this episode seems to be everyone’s favorite, I love it because of how she nailed the drunkenness and how she quivers with distaste of the drink; her face is forever memorable. “It’s hot in here.”
2) Lucy’s Hot Pink Ball- Again her movement and facial gestures are hilarious in this episode as she tries to do ballet.
3) Lucy’s Lemon Lime Ball- This episode is not my favorite, but this moment of her doing Carmen Miranda happens to be the funniest of moments for myself. It’s genius!!!!
4) Lucy’s Fritzy Orange Ball- I admire her for being able to make fun of herself and her fearlessness to not always look so pretty.

There are many more Lucy’s to come; she is a true inspiration not only in my creative process, but also in my everyday life. Thank you for the laughter.

A Little Girl Donation

A Little Girl Donation

On October 17th, I had the opportunity to donate one of my Little Girls to the Company of Angels Theater where I had my first show in July 2009 at the historic Alexandria Hotel. The evening was in celebration of the 50th year anniversary of the company. Being honored was Leonard Nimoy who is a founding member of LA’s oldest non-profit theater company.

It was my privilege to donate ‘Uhura Stars in Space’ a 3-set piece featuring Nichelle Nichols as Uhura on the original Star Trek series. I was fortunate enough to also be invited to her home to have the piece signed by her for the auction on this evening of the gala.

In the future, I am excited about making many more contributions.

Little Girls September 2009

Little Girls September

It’s been a couple of months since I last published a post. I’ve been in a creative rut and falling in love with a man named Jason. The little girls below are for the month of September 2009, in honor of my birth on September 25th 1968. I have had them started for some time but have had a challenge in finishing them.
1) I Have a Feeling…-10 years ago, I was with a friend shooting a Drag Queen Calendar called Hollywood is a Drag and they were short one drag queen and so I was asked if I wanted to do Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. This painting is taken from the calendar. I put the LA city backdrop as my Emerald City as I was not only born here, but I have come to absolutely love LA.
2) Becoming Me- One night in San Francisco, I dressed up in drag with my best friends and we went out to a house party. The words in the painting are part of who I am. Becoming me has taken me many years to accept. It has taken courage and acceptance. I am now at home with myself.
3) Rosa in Rosas- One night in Los Angeles, a group of friends dressed up and headed out to a club called Makeup at the El Rey Theater. I wore a rose patterned dress and after some years of doing drag a few times, I was told that I should pick a name. I picked Rosa. Not only did the name feel right, but also it is my Moms favorite flower.

Shortly, I will be finishing the 3 pieces for the month of October 2009. I have some catching up to do.
